Not Technical Enough? Working with webopedia
I think I know computers and so does my 2 year old who knows how to start a computer and yes navigate mouse as soon as I take him to Barney or Elmo page. But the point is do you know enough to understand what the hiring manager looking for?
I was lucky enough to learn C++ and shell programming back in school days and it helped me tremendously
in sourcing technical candidates.
I talked to many recruiters who are afraid to get into technical side of sourcing as they don't understand what the hiring manager is talking about.
For example the hiring manager says I am looking for some with strong Object Oriented background/ J2EE,
Database connectivity and foundation classes experience. Now two things can happen on hearing this request -First-
Your jaws wide open and ask the manager what the heck he's talking about?
or second pretend and say perfect I know what you looking for and I will work on it. Then wait for the miracle or employee referral to come.
If you are doing technical recruiting for years you shouldn't have any problem understanding the manager's request but no one's an expert and the technology keeps changing.
Now assuming you are new to technical sourcing; One of the solution is to head over to Webopedia.com
webopedia is "The only(I am no sure about the only part) online dictionary and search engine you need for computer and Internet technology definitions".
Taking the above example you type in "object oriented" in webopedia giving you the definition and you quickly learn that yes Java is a OO programming language.
Now inputting the words Java database connectivity and foundation classes
and your search becomes so simple - J2EE AND JDBC AND AWT to start with. Now you can do better on searching
with the understanding of the terms and with exact keywords on your board on search engine.
Another thing to check out is the "LINKS" and "Related Categories" on webopedia.com which will give you lot more ideas.
Stay tuned...........
